E-Bike or Manual for Older Adults: Is it a Better Workout?

E-Bike or Manual Workout for Older Adults

There’s a new debate cruising through the biking paths — are E-Bikes “cheating,” or are they a smart way for older adults to stay active? As a personal trainer in her 60s, I’ve gone the classic route with my trusty beach cruiser. My husband, at 65, just switched to an E-Bike and swears he’s getting a better workout than ever.

So, who’s right? Let’s take a ride through the facts.

Manual Bikes: The Classic Calorie Burner

Pros:

  • Full-body effort: You’re powering every push of the pedal, which means more cardiovascular and muscular engagement.
  • Burns more calories (potentially): A longer, harder ride can increase energy expenditure.
  • Simple, budget-friendly: No battery or motor, just you and the road.

Cons:

  • Hills and headwinds can be tough: For those with joint issues or lower fitness levels, this can be discouraging.
  • Shorter distances: You might cut your ride short if you’re tired, missing out on extended cardio benefits.

E-Bikes: Assisted, but Still a Workout

Despite the motor assist, E-Bikes aren’t lazy riding. In fact, a 2018 pilot study published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine found that older adults who used E-Bikes improved their cardiovascular fitness and covered longer distances compared to manual bike riders, with comparable exercise benefits.

Additionally, a University of Colorado Boulder study showed that adults riding E-Bikes for 40 minutes three times a week improved aerobic capacity and blood sugar control within a month.

Pros:

  • Longer rides, more often: The assist makes it easier to ride uphill, into the wind, or simply farther than you might on a manual bike.
  • Joint-friendly: Great for knees, hips, and those recovering from injuries.
  • Confidence booster: If you’re nervous about your stamina, the assist is like a reassuring hand on your back.

Cons:

  • Less muscle load: You might not engage your legs and core as intensely as with a manual ride.
  • Pricey: Quality E-Bikes aren’t cheap, and they do need charging and maintenance.
  • Can feel bulky: Heavier than a regular bike, especially if the battery dies mid-ride!

So Which Is Better?

Here’s the truth: the “better” workout is the one you’ll actually do consistently.

If you love powering your own ride like I do — go manual! You’ll build strength and endurance every time you saddle up. But if you’re like my husband and find joy in going longer distances, tackling hills with a smile, and riding more days each week — then E-Bikes are a fantastic fitness tool.
