Fitness is a Daily Process

Fitness is a process of healthy habits repeated daily creating positive results over time. Nothing happens quickly and there is no magic wand for instant weight loss or muscle gain. In fact, quick-fix thoughts and methods only set you up for frustration and failure.

One Day at a Time

Fitness is achieved one day at a time. Biceps don’t suddenly appear after one day in the gym and your waistline doesn’t shrink a size. What does happen with regular exercise is progress. The muscle will show up but give it time to work, grow, and build. It’s like a fine wine or great simmering stew.  The journey will be rewarding but patience is required.

Fad Fitness

Fad diets and gimmicks to get fit may be tempting but are not recommended. Most fad diets are restrictive removing essential nutrients needed for the body to function at optimal levels. Restrictive diets may help you lose weight in the short term but are not sustainable for long-term weight loss maintenance. According to weight loss research, over 90% of dieters gained the weight back plus more within two years. Furthermore, restrictive diets have the potential to cause nutrient deficiencies and other health problems.

Supplements are also popular for weight loss and fitness in general. They are marketed as miracle-working solutions to build muscle, enhance athletic performance, promote weight loss, and other false claims. Unfortunately, supplements are not regulated by the FDA and there is no guarantee as to the effectiveness, or purity of these products. In fact, there is no scientific evidence to support that supplements will improve athletic performance, increase muscle size, increase energy, or do any of the things claimed on the product label.

Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is a journey and not a destination. There’s no need to feel rushed or stressed about getting fit because it’s a simple process. Healthy habits repeated daily are what create a healthy lifestyle. It takes time and effort but the lifelong results are rewarding. Also, there is plenty of research to support a healthy lifestyle as the way to achieve fitness goals and overall good health.

Fitness Goals

Fitness goals are a daily process and are not achieved overnight. Give yourself some grace as a beginner and patience as you focus on daily goals. Keeping a fitness journal to chart daily progress can be a great accountability tool. For example, you can keep track of workouts, daily food and water intake, and how you’re feeling that day overall. Celebrate your daily achievements of eating better and getting in that workout. Stay positive even when things aren’t showing up as fast as you think they should.

Health is Personal

Fitness is personal and not universal. That means we are all different and respond differently to change. Your results may happen at a slower pace than the next person, and that is okay. It’s important not to compare to others and to focus on your fitness journey. You’re not here to look like someone else but to become your best healthy self through daily choices. Who cares if your friend lost 5 lbs and you didn’t reach that mark. Fitness is not about who is faster at achieving results.

The goal is to get fit and love yourself through the process. The days are going to pass anyway so focus on adopting a healthy lifestyle the right way. Today is what we have, tomorrow isn’t promised and yesterday is gone. Be in the now with your fitness and you’ll get there one day at a time.

  1. Hi Sherry,

Love your candid share and positive mindset of self-recognition with your health and fitness achievements. Keep up the healthy changes and lifestyle. Thanks for reading, be well and Stay Healthy!

  2. been going back to the gym for over a year now, and using a trainer. I somehow thought I would be farther along in building muscle, loosing weight. Some of it my fault, sugar addition and loving to bake. I am loosing steam to keep doing this when I see so many ladies at the gym who have great tone, flexibility and muscle. This is a good reminder, one day at a time, this is not a fad. it is a lifestyle change. I am now 54 and when I look back a year I have come a long way.

  3. Awesome advice on how to stay positive while you are working out trying to reach your goal body image. Thanks for the share!
