Numerous articles tell you how to get fit, but there are things to avoid to accomplish this goal. In addition, fit people implement certain strategies to achieve results and maintain their bodies. We can learn a few things from these successful fitness methods. The following list covers 12 things to avoid to get fit:
1. Procrastinate
Procrastinating wastes your time and can negatively affect your health. Therefore, if you want to get fit, implement a plan to start now and not tomorrow. Fit individuals don’t wait around for things to happen, they make fitness results happen.
2. Make Excuses
Excuses don’t burn calories or improve your health. Similarly, reasons not to do the work continually get in the way of improving your fitness. On the other hand, fit people understand the importance of their health, make it a priority, and live a disciplined lifestyle. For example, they exercise even when they don’t feel like it.
3. Go on a Diet
Diets are shown to produce short-term results and lots of frustration. As a result, weight loss may happen initially but returns, plus more, when the diet is over. On the other hand, fit people consume nutritious foods most of the time and believe all foods are acceptable in a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, this food freedom eliminates restrictive eating, removes food guilt, and allows for a sustainable nutrition plan.Â
4. Bash Yourself
Negative self-talk can derail your mental outlook and fitness program. For example, many people are unable to accept who they are now while working on the body they want. Contrarily, fit and healthy people maintain a positive attitude, self-love, and body acceptance every step of the fitness journey.
5. Avoid Making Health a Priority
Fitness is often not a priority for people and a big reason results are not achieved. Unfortunately, a large percentage of Americans are not eating right or exercising regularly. Furthermore, according to recent data, 25.3% of American adults are classified as physically inactive. On the other hand, fit individuals see the value of health improvement and make the time to live a healthy lifestyle.
6. Compare Your Progress
Fitness results vary per person and the reason comparing to others can be detrimental. Unfortunately, many people compare their progress to others. As a result, feelings of frustration and disappointment may develop, and even thoughts of quitting. Contrarily, fit people don’t compare, focus on their progress, and do what works best for them without caring what other people think.
7. Get Fit for Others
Getting fit to please someone else is not taking good care of your physical or mental health. Additionally, other people can disappoint you and make you feel bad about your fitness efforts. On the other hand, fit people choose themselves as the reason to get healthy for their happiness and health.
8. Expect Instant Results
Fitness results take time and many people struggle with being patient through the process. As a result, this can lead to frustration and searching for the next fad diet offering false guarantees. Contrarily, fit individuals maintain a relaxed mindset, trust the process, and realize getting healthy is a consistent process that requires patience.
9. Focus on Slipups
Focusing on slip-ups instead of positive fitness efforts can be problematic. For example, many people struggle to accept slip-ups as part of the program. In other words, slip-ups are normal but food guilt and negative self-talk can make a fit lifestyle feel like a burden. On the other hand, fit people understand fitness is not perfect, accept slip-ups as normal, focus on the positive, and enjoy all foods as part of a balanced healthy life.
10. Fear Trying New Things
Doubt and fear steal more dreams than failure ever will. Unfortunately, many people fear the gym environment, being around new people, and trying new things. As a result, fearful thinking can become an excuse to avoid participating in a fitness program. Contrarily, fit people will try new things even if they feel scared or intimidated. They understand the health benefits gained are life-long compared to a temporary feeling.
11. Sabotage Your Program
A fitness program can be easily sabotaged by your own choices or the influence of others. As a result, skipping workouts becomes more frequent, and eating healthy, is inconsistent. The program may have started strong but is no longer a priority. On the other hand, fit people keep their exercise appointments and eat healthily at least 80% of the time.
12. Give Up
Not seeing fitness results may cause frustration to the point of giving up. Additionally, you may be unhappy about your current exercise program and restrictive diet. Instead of trying a better strategy, many people choose to give up and return to unhealthy habits. Contrarily, fit people never give up and if something isn’t working, they keep trying until they find what works best for their body, health, and life.
