Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle: My Journey and Insights

Darla Leal, 60 years old, healthy lifestyle

Years ago, I adopted a healthy lifestyle, and I’ve never looked back. Today, wellness is my natural state of being. That said, I am excited to share my journey and insights on embracing a healthy lifestyle.

My passion for health and fitness has blossomed into my career. When you do what you love, it hardly feels like work. I find joy in sharing how I live my life, and it’s incredibly rewarding to help others on their journeys.

A Realistic Approach to Fitness

I believe in a practical approach to health and fitness. Rather than striving for perfection, I celebrate progress. Fitness isn’t about rigid restrictions; it’s about finding a healthy balance of nourishing foods and regular exercise.

I advocate for a positive mindset and a healthy perspective on fitness. Enjoying the food you eat and the exercise you engage in is essential. Living healthily should feel fulfilling and joyful.

Embracing Nourishment Over Restriction

Cooking at home is my preference. It gives me control over my meals and helps me avoid the excess salt and saturated fats often found in restaurant dishes. I prioritize organic, whole foods, including a diverse array of vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, nuts, grains, and some dairy products.

I believe that all foods can be part of a healthy lifestyle. This means I indulge in homemade brownies, cookies, burgers, and steak without guilt. Eating healthily most of the time allows me to enjoy my cravings, whether for chocolate or fries, without feeling deprived. Life is about balance.

I don’t believe in diets or calorie counting. Diets tend to be overly restrictive, unsustainable, and often lead to frustration. Research shows that while people may initially lose weight on a diet, they often regain it—and then some—because such practices aren’t sustainable in the long run. I fully agree with the saying that “diets don’t work.”

Diet culture has complicated our relationship with food, leading to unnecessary stress and confusion over what should be a straightforward process of nourishing our bodies. One of the biggest challenges I face as a nutritional guide is helping clients break free from the cycle of dieting. The greatest success is fostering a healthy relationship with food that complements improved fitness.

Efficient Workouts for a Healthy Life

I believe workouts can be effective without being extreme or time-consuming. I don’t spend endless hours at the gym to maintain my fitness; studies suggest that effective workouts can be completed in 60 minutes or less. For me, exercise is a healthy outlet, not a punishment for indulgences.

I aim for 4-5 workouts per week, incorporating at least two recovery days. My lifestyle is realistic, sustainable, and positively oriented.

Striving for My Best Self

Being my best self means discovering what works for my body—and that’s perfectly fine. Fitness is an individual journey; we cannot compare our programs or results with others. The truth is, even if we followed the same diet and workout routine, we wouldn’t look the same.

My focus is on daily personal improvements, which is the beauty of health and fitness. Each person’s journey is unique, and embracing this individuality is crucial for self-love and body positivity.
